Appearances are deceiving for this traditional family man, a taxi driver in Tel Aviv. Amid the pop craze of the late 1980s, Boaz, his twelve-year-old son, is happily preparing for his bar mitzvah. But when he catches his father having sex in the pool locker room, the boy is overcome with panic, rage, and shame. The new AIDS epidemic in the United States is all over the news. The secret will have a corrosive effect on family ties.
Told through Boaz’s eyes, this story relegates the gay man to the background. But behind the silence and the unspoken words lies a happiness that needs no shouting. Carried by magnificently subtle actors and actresses, the film transports viewers into a paradoxically gentle world, cradled by the beauty of a father-son relationship, and offers a memorable final scene.
