In 1960s Japan, amid rapid economic growth, a policy of moral purification took hold, leading to severe crackdowns on sex workers. Under a law that applied only to “women”, transgender sex workers—known at the time as “blue boys”—found themselves caught in a legal loophole that displeased the police. When the police charged a surgeon who performed sex reassignment surgeries, a landmark trial began.
Based on the archives of the actual trial, the film pays tribute to a pivotal chapter in the history of trans rights.
