In a coastal town in New Zealand, life picks up again during the summer—a chance for 14-year-old Sid to reinvent herself among the vacationers. From behind her bangs, her bucket hat, and her placid expression, she observes the young adults as role models to emulate, bodies to desire, and fantasized relationships. Her boldness, impulsiveness, and clumsiness blend into one, to the point where she assumes a male identity in the chat rooms of the nascent internet.
Produced by Jane Campion, this film shares a teenage girl’s chaotic perspective with extreme subtlety, offering a powerful experience in the tradition of high-quality New Zealand cinema: psychologically sharp and emotionally raw.
