ALLURES DISSIDENTES

Allures dissidentes is a book that traces the cultural and material history of appearance from the 19th century to the present.
Every day, as we get dressed, style our hair, and put on our shoes, we create looks—often without even realizing it. The book explores historical and contemporary strategies employed by queer and non-queer people alike who step outside dominant codes and negotiate with Western binary norms. Focusing on Switzerland, Belgium, Canada, metropolitan France, Guadeloupe, and Réunion, this volume offers seminal articles in French to broaden a field of study still dominated by English-language resources.
This book is not an encyclopedia that confines and solidifies definitions, but rather a patchwork of narratives that invites those interested in fashion, gender, and queer cultures to engage with the content and create their own interpretations.
by Elizabeth Fischer, HES-SO professor of cultural history of fashion at the Geneva University of Art and Design (HEAD), where she headed the Fashion and Jewelry Design department (2009–2021), Magali Le Mens, associate professor at the University of Rennes 2, exhibition curator, documentary filmmaker, specializing in LGBTQIA+ art history and non-binary culture; and Clém Künzler, alias Klimte, a Swiss poet and performer.
