A screening of three short films showcasing Barbara Hammer’s work—filming, loving, and aging. This is a window into her short-film oeuvre, in which the question of touch is central. Her lesbianism led her to create images in the way she did, with a visual exploration of touch and a fierce determination to make viewers active participants in the images.

DOUBLE STRENGTH (1978)
VITAL SIGNS (1991)

screening led by Laurine Labourier, a freelance journalist specializing in queer representations in film (Slate, Têtu, Gouinement Lundi, etc.) and a fan of Barbara Hammer

A leading figure in experimental film and queer activism over the past fifty years, the American artist Barbara Hammer (1939–2019) never ceased to inhabit this invisible screen and to fight for an accurate—and prolific—representation of lesbian and queer people. Her unique body of work explores intimacy, the representation of lesbian sexualities, and queer history, even confronting death itself. A thrilling and enlightening journey into the heart of the exhilaration of creation, the thrill of loving freely, and the urgency to leave a mark.
The program features two screenings of the filmmaker’s short films and a 2026 documentary. An exceptional spotlight to explore, understand, discuss, and bring back into the spotlight the filmmaker who inspires so much desire.
