BARBARA FOREVER
With a camera strapped to her wrist, Barbara Hammer filmed everything: her partners, her lovers, her friends, feminist questions, nature, intimacy, death, and more. She remains one of the first to document lesbian lives, to explore, understand, and leave a record of these free women. Her work is the perfect example of the intimate as political. Her guiding principle: experimentation. To break with tradition and explore new possibilities. Always with humor.
Over five decades, from the hippie movement of the 1970s to the queer communities of the 2010s, she has built a vast body of work that has earned recognition in artistic and cultural circles.
The portrait is rich and thoroughly documented, weaving together film clips and photographs set to the artist’s own voice-over. An immersive, liberating, and inspiring film.
