Who will be the most handsome, the sexiest Jesus? This completely crazy contest is held every year at Easter by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in a park in San Francisco. A colorful, joyful, and queer crowd gathers. And these drag nuns host the show.
Their movement was born there in 1979, founded by gay men deeply committed to the Christian message, to counter the prevailing religious conservatism. They then spread throughout the world to promote social justice, human rights, and “universal joy.”
The film interweaves zany reincarnations and blasphemous cabaret acts with chronicles of the Sisters’ thrilling and activist history. With lightheartedness and wit, it transports viewers to the heart of another world—a world where one “atones for shame and guilt,” where one is no longer torn between faith and desire, and where communities are joyfully celebrated.
