TABLE RONDE : Trouble dans le masculin

A wave of masculinism is sweeping across Western societies with increasing force. It promotes virile cis men and submissive cis women, asserts that gay men are not men, that lesbians are fake men, and that transgender people do not exist. Amplified by the hyper-accessibility of social media, this misogynistic and LGBT-phobic binary vision spreads its violence, particularly among young people.

But how did these societies construct this masculine ideal, elevated to a supreme value? Alongside this exacerbation, what other types of masculinity exist?

As a vector and factory of representations, the 7th art undoubtedly holds part of the answer, as it exposes models of masculinity ranging from the most stereotypical to the most divergent, even under the gaze of queer filmmakers.

Through examples of LGBTIQ+ characters in films ranging from westerns to comedies, dramas, and genre films, this round table analyzes images of virility, desirability, feminine masculinities, trans* masculinities, cross-dressing, drag queens, etc.
