ANY OTHER WAY: THE JACKIE SHANE STORY
In 1962, in the heart of segregationist America, where LGBTIQ+ people were criminalized, Jackie Shane (1940-2019), a black trans woman, sang Any Other Way. “There is no other way,” “I will not be any other way, whether you like it or not.” A pure voice, powerful in its resistance, an inspiring model of uncompromising integrity, an icon of blues and soul, on the cusp of international fame, who suddenly disappeared from the scene and remained in seclusion for 40 years.
Lulled by her music, her latest revelations beautifully brought to life in animated images, her rich autobiography read and embodied, carried by a production team that is primarily Black, trans, and queer, the film paints a moving and empowering portrait of this pioneer who has been invisible for too long.
