WO/MEN HOUSE WITH A VOICE
Six women in Albania today, at the heart of a conservative patriarchal society. Six unique and different stories, but one identical decision: to take on the social role of a man. They are Burrneshas. In this way, they gain a voice in society, status, and respect. Their refusal to “play women’s roles” offers them freedom. Are the essences of life identified as feminine less worthy of being lived to the fullest?
The director, the grandniece of a Burrnesha, takes an intrigued look, delves into their private lives, and questions their internalized conditioning. This story invites reflection on gender expression, offers a moving ode to freedom, and calls for liberation from patriarchy.
