WO/MEN HOUSE WITH A VOICE
Six women in Albania today, at the heart of a conservative patriarchal society. Six unique and different stories, but one identical decision: to take on the social role of a man. They are Burrneshas. In this way, they gain a voice in society, status, and respect. Their refusal to “play women’s roles” offers them freedom. But is life identified as feminine less worthy of being lived to the fullest?
The director, the grandniece of a Burrnesha delves into these women’s private lives, and questions their internalized conditioning. This story questions gender expression and offers a moving ode to freedom as well as calls for liberation from patriarchy.
