Figure incontournable de l’Amérique des années 1960, engagée pour l’égalité des droits, Marsha P. Johnson est présente lors des émeutes de Stonewall. Avec Sylvia Rivera, elle est l’une des meneuses du mouvement pour les droits LGBT. Dans les années 1980, elle milite également au sein d’Act Up. En 1992, son corps est retrouvé noyé dans l’Hudson. La police conclut à un suicide : impossible selon ses proches. Le documentaire peint à la fois le portrait de cette icône captivante et les recherches menées pour invalider la sentence officielle et démontrer que Marsha P. Johnson a été assassinée. Un meurtre parmi les premiers d’une liste qui continue de s’allonger, un symbole éloquent des violences effroyables commises encore aujourd’hui à l’encontre des personnes transgenres. Une réalisation poignante mêlant archives rares et enquête à suspens.
